Philip Leclerc Wins $26,000 Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship

Philip Leclerc

Philip Leclerc has won a $26,000 Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship for 2007-2008, permitting him to study at the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania during the 2007-2008 academic year. An outstanding Honors Program student, who previously won both a $1,000 Honors Scholarship and a $2,000 Greene Honors Scholarship at CNU, Phil plans to take courses in economics, sociology, and perhaps mathematics, while undertaking a service project that assists the community, and involves the Warwick Rotary Club of Newport News, his sponsor in the Rotary competition.

Phil is especially interested in contemporary critiques of economic paradigms, and aspires to graduate study in behavioral economics. He’s currently working on two independent research projects with Drs. Michelle Vachris (Economics) and Jason Hart (Psychology).

Inspired by the human rights disaster in Darfur, Phil co-founded CNU’s thriving chapter of Citizens of the World. Last year he worked with children of a Sudanese family and this year he’s assisting a 20-year old Sudanese man prepare for his G. E. D. So the chance to study in East Africa is especially appealing. Phil took part in CNU’s North African Exchange in the summer of 2006, and looks forward to visiting Morocco in the coming summer and reuniting with some of the same students. He’s also served as News Editor and Business Manager of the Captain’s Log, as well as President of Phi Alpha Delta, the pre-law fraternity.
